Talk:Main Page/Archive
Old Community portal article
- Any ideas on how we could use this page? - TCK 23:50, 19 January 2006 (GMT)
- I don't know. There are a lot of pre-made wiki pages. We don't necessarily have to use all of them. However, maybe we can use this page for SotW feedback, such as how I previously had that SotW information thread at GFF. - Kaleb.G 13:55, 21 January 2006 (PST)
- What about using this space to express my dislike of GFF, and its mandatory monthly week of downtime? - TCK 20:30, 22 January 2006 (GMT)
- That sounds fair enough, especially since it's down again right now. Should we stay until the end of the "year" at GFF and plan for an alternative location in the meantime? - Kaleb.G 07:46, 10 February 2006 (PST)
- Yes. Or at the very least, let us trial out a cross-forum event - TCK 23:30, 10 February 2006 (GMT)
- Hmm, a cross-forum event sounds pretty good to try. - Kaleb.G 18:11, 10 February 2006 (PST)
- Might even get some new voters/nominators. We can dream. - CHz 20:43, 12 February 2006 (PST)
- You never know. Obvious candidates for a cross-forum event would be Slightly Dark and OverClocked ReMix. Any other suggestions?
- Either way, I think it'd be wise to maintain GFF as the main home, but keep GFF'ers aware of alternative places to vote in the unlikely chance (Har Har) of GFF being down. - TCK 21:43, 13 February 2006 (GMT)
- Guys, maybe this is or isn't news to you, but it's looking as if maybe this was GFF's last hurrah. See http://www.geneseo.edu/~rkr4/gf.html
- Jesus Christ, they sure did bottle up that figure for a long time without action. Where the hell does that leave SotW? - TCK 22:22, 13 February 2006 (GMT)
- I think we need to talk about what to do with SotW right now. I don't really like using this page for big discussion, so anyone willing to meet in #sotw? - Kaleb.G 16:03, 13 February 2006 (PST)
- Now that the temporary GFF has assumed the standard GFF layout, are you planning to hold votings there as well? - Djinova 18:57, 18 February 2006 (GMT)
- Check the temporary GFF forums. I've made a post there outlining what's up. - TCK 11:46, 18 February 2006 (PST)
Forums to use
- We could also possibly use Soundtrack Central: http://www.altpop.com/stc/forums/viewforum.php?id=2 - Kaleb.G 20:58, 13 February 2006 (PST)
- Per what we were discussing in SotW Wiki:Community Portal, it might be a good idea if we do it everywhere during the first week to help get the word out to older members and perhaps attract some new ones. At the very least, we'll get an idea of how much activity will take place in each place to factor into the decision of where to make the permanent new home. - CHz 21:21, 13 February 2006 (PST)
- I think we should look into as soon as possible what the policies governing the various forums are. I don't think SD would have much of an issue, but we'd probably have to find some way to ask about it over at OCR, as while I'd love to do it there, that community's big enough that we'd probably have to ask permission from SOMEONE. - Mo0 21:29, 13 February 2006 (PST)
- I also like the idea of a cross-forum event to spread the word and see which of the potential suitors would be the best fit. Another forum it could be posted at is Chudah's forum: http://chudahs-corner.com/forums/index.php - DH 21:49, 13 February 2006 (PST)
Meeting
- To Staff (and anyone else who wants to join in) Would it be possible to talk in #sotw tomorrow sometime, so we can finalise where we go. If we could get this sorted (ie. voting threads) by the upcoming Monday that would be stellar. - TCK 22:05, 13 February 2006 (PST)
- I should be able to get in there with no problem at 8:00 PM CST. Maybe as early as 7:00, but that depends on how much lab work I have to do. - CHz 01:03, 14 February 2006 (PST)
Kaleb will be away
- Hey guys, I'm going to be gone Feb. 15-21 while I visit some friends in Reno. I likely won't be able to help out in any way until I return, so I'll leave it to you guys if you want to make executive decisions about what happens with SotW. Not much else I can say except good luck, and e-mail me if you need anything; I'll try to check it when I have a chance. - Kaleb.G 02:35, 15 February 2006 (PST)
- Roger that, Kaleb. I'll see if I can get CHz to confirm the plans, then post it as news. - TCK 12:59, 15 February 2006 (PST)
- I'm just checking in and it seems like you guys are doing a great job! The Nice Work Guy would be proud. - Kaleb.G 15:39, 16 February 2006 (PST)
Where to restart
- From the introduction thread: "The plan is to start roughly where we left off, first with a Battle thread (the last eight weeks' winners against each other to determine the best of the best), and then with Week 49." I'm not particularly bothered that we're doing Week 49 now. Actually, it's probably better to get it finally over and done with. We'll need to plan a time for Battle 6 though. - TCK 17:05, 20 February 2006 (PST)
- Oh, we planned to do the Battle first, didn't we. :( Totally my bad. - CHz 17:25, 20 February 2006 (PST)
- Next week okay? - TCK 17:58, 20 February 2006 (PST)
OCR likely no-go
- I've yet to run it by anyone, but I can most likely say that OCR would be a no-go. If we allowed copyrighted MP3s to be illegally linked on the boards we might have other people hoping to do the same citing SotW as justification. Nonetheless, I'll ask the fellow mods and djp for input and get back to you. In the meantime, I don't think we can do anything at OCR this coming week, but I'll definitely have a resolution by next Monday. - Liontamer 09:31, 19 February 2006 (PST)
- I had a feeling that would be the case. If you can sort something, even some kind of loophole whereas we don't actually link to the files from OCR itself, it's be cool. Otherwise, no real problem. - TCK 09:58, 19 February 2006 (PST)
- Until further notice, OCR will definitely not be one of the SotW forums. - TCK 16:19, 26 February 2006 (PST)
Server will need to be switched next month
- The current hosting plan runs out April 25th. I run a new VPS server which I plan to move the SotW site/wiki to; ideally next month. I would like to find out exactly when is a good time to do this. And let me know if you have any questions. - Kaleb.G 01:02, 23 February 2006 (PST)
- Best time would be during the weekend, if possible. If you can do it all in one day, make it a Sunday. Anytime will do though. - TCK 13:31, 25 February 2006 (PST)
- I'd say do it Saturday, actually. Sunday evening is generally when I get all the tracks uploaded for the next week. - CHz 19:10, 25 February 2006 (PST)
Google AdSense at bottom of main site
- Since this was being tested at the Gamingforce Temporary Forums, I figured I'd try it out here. It it makes any money, that can be used towards server costs, or maybe I can spread the wealth to staff. ;) - Kaleb.G 01:42, 24 February 2006 (PST)
- Ideally I'd like to keep the clean interface of the main site as it is, but the money's gotta come from somewhere. And besides that, I'm poor and could do with the money. - TCK 13:31, 25 February 2006 (PST)
- Two days later and this hasn't earned me a single cent, so I'm taking it down. Apparently the site just isn't visited frequently enough to be a useful palette of advertising. - Kaleb.G 03:42, 26 February 2006 (PST)
- I'm keeping the Firefox button though. It encourages Firefox (over IE, which the site doesn't look as good in) and earns money in the progress. - Kaleb.G 03:49, 26 February 2006 (PST)
Roles of TCK/Mo0
- Now that OCR is pretty much out of the question, this leaves me with no allocated position. I'm thinking that until further notice, I'll serve as some kind of wiki maintainer. There's still some work to do with the Song of the Week rulespage, after the GFF split. Any other suggestions guys? - TCK 16:19, 26 February 2006 (PST)
- My activities in the vgm communities will most likely be reduced after June (getting married) so you can take over SD before May if we're still going cross-platform at that time. - DH 00:09, 27 February 2006 (EST)
- Hey, congrats, _DH_. ;) Anyway, TCK, it's also possible you could bring SotW back to GFF when it returns, because I know how much you love the downtime there. ='D - Kaleb.G 08:42, 27 February 2006 (PST)
- As of Monday 6th March, Mo0 will be in charge of the returning GamingForce forums. I'll be taking over from Mo0 at Chudah's Corner. - 81.178.255.205 20:32, 2 March 2006 (PST)
Temporary Nomination Queue
- Do we still need this? - Kaleb.G 08:42, 27 February 2006 (PST)
- Not likely! - CHz 12:04, 27 February 2006 (PST)
- Kill it with FIRE! - TCK 16:15, 27 February 2006 (PST)
- DELETED! - Kaleb.G 15:02, 3 March 2006 (PST)
Thread Creation
- For the record, it won't hurt my feelings if I don't make my thread at STC first; y'all can go ahead and make yours ahead of me if you have the time. - CHz 17:13, 27 February 2006 (PST)
- I went ahead and made the WEEK 51 GFF thread, completely overstepping all bounds and authority. Would anyone mind adding it to the protected thread list up front? http://gamingforce.com/forums/showthread.php?p=32652 - Orion mk3 16:20 13 March 2006 (EST)
Roles of TCK/_DH_
- After the abandonment of posting at Chudah's Corner and Slightly Dark, this leaves myself and _DH_ out of a job. I get the impression that _DH_ won't be too upset if he hasn't got anything to do. In the meantime, I will see about getting to work on the wiki. - TCK 19:54, 19 March 2006 (PST)
Wiki Maintenance
- After giving myself a well deserved holiday from SotW (if I do say so myself!), I figured it's time to actually work on the wiki, and get it up to date. I've updated the main Song of the Week page, including cross forum references and various other things. I've also got a Song of the Year page up. My main project for the meantime will be updating the Voting Archive to represent as many weeks as possible from Week 1 to 48 (including battles), working downwards from 48. I need voting information for Weeks 1-16, 27, 29, 44, as well as Battles 1 and 2. If anyone has these (spreadsheets, website archives), it would be much appreciated. - TCK 20:56, 24 April 2006 (PDT)
- Check out the docs folder within the main sotw site for recovered threads, past research and spreadsheets. The GFF archive also has threads from earlier weeks. I think it would be neat to continue that sotw stats spreadsheet which lists each nominator's history and success. - DH 19:14, 25 April 2006 (EDT)
Chudah's Corner Revival
- Curious, I decided to check out the aftermath of us leaving both Slightly Dark and Chudah's Corner. On the day we left, I received a PM from Chudah:
Hi,
I'm really sorry about the lack of interest on the Song of the Week on CC. =( However, before you decide to completely remove the contest from our forums, would you perhaps be interested in giving us a second chance? Things have been rather hectic with us converting over to php and adding many new features to the site, and as such I just didn't have the time to promote SOTW as much as I would have liked. However, now that things are coming together, I would really like to try and promote this more. Some ideas that come to mind include posting a banner on the main page announcing the competition on our site as well as adding a button that links to the SOTW forum on our main page (like the ChudahFM and Mailing List buttons).
Anyway, if you'd like to discuss this more, please let me know. Again, I apologize for not emphasizing the competition as much as I could have, but that doesn't mean we can't try a different approach this time around.
Take care,
Chudah
- I wouldn't be opposed to bringing SotW back to Chudah's Corner, if the offer still stands. I figured I'd see what my fellow staff members have to say, but if no objections are raised I'll gladly organise things as much as I can around there. Who knows, it might still work out there, and even if it doesn't no harm in trying again. For you guys at least. - TCK 20:56, 24 April 2006 (PDT)
- PM received from Chudah, offer still stands. - TCK 11:59, 25 April 2006 (PDT)
- I see no harm in giving it a try again with more support and recognition on the site from Chudah. Maybe if she participated as well, it would help encourage other members to join in too. - DH 19:18, 25 April 2006 (EDT)
- Just a note that Song of the Week will be returning tomorrow. - TCK 21:15, 14 May 2006 (PDT)
- Thinks are dead here now. What happened? - Kaleb.G 13:43, 30 June 2006 (PDT)
- We've usually been getting at least two voters a week. Give it some time and hopefully they'll come through this week as well. CHz 15:20, 30 June 2006 (PDT)
Current events
- Do you guys still plan on using the Current events page? - Kaleb.G 13:44, 30 June 2006 (PDT)
- We have a current events page? =O CHz 15:22, 30 June 2006 (PDT)
